The PhD Scholarship Applications student is part of the DFG cooperation project "polygons work in tundra wetlands: status and dynamics of climate variability in polar regions (polygon) The interdisciplinary project (with the University of Hamburg, Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Potsdam, and several Russian. Partners) studies the dynamic short-and long-term peatland polygon of the Arctic in northern Siberia (Indigirka Delta, Kolyma) in relation to climate change climate. The Scholarship Applications project aims at the development of the Pleistocene and modeling of future changes in response to global warming to be reconstructed. The sub-project in Greifswald focuses on the development of recent decades and centuries. Theoretical high-energy physics is a research area in physics that encompasses some of the most fundamental questions in physics, about the smallest building blocks of nature and their interactions, but also seemingly disparate topics such as the evolution of the universe.Scholarship Applications in this field some of the most successful disciplines of modern physics meet, for example, the theory of relativity and quantum physics. The project is essentially experimental and related to pressure measurement technique.The project aims firstly to investigate rotor-stator interaction in axial machines of Kaplan type. Detailed unsteady pressure measurements will be performed on a Kaplan model at Vattenfall Research and Development, Älvkarleby, Sweden. Fluid conditions at and outside the energy efficient operation point are of interest.The second part of the project aims to develop flow measurements technique for low head machines. Pressure time or/and hybrid ultrasound/Winter-Kennedy method(s) may be used. Experiments will be supported by numerical investigations.The project implies close collaboration with Chalmers, Andritz and Vattenfall in Sweden but also the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway and University of Tehran, Iran.
Qualifications :Applicants should have an MSc/civ.ing degree within mechanical engineering or applied physics or equivalent. Previous experience in computational and/or experimental fluid mechanics is a merit.

The Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) at the University of Leeds is a leader in clinical trials and was one of the first 26 units of clinical trials in the United Kingdom, the full registration status of grant the UK Clinical Research Collaboration. The Unit conducts national and international randomized clinical trials in a variety of clinical areas (cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke, mental health, obesity, skin, musculoskeletal disorders and care of elderly people). The CTRU has a strong portfolio of methodological research related to clinical trials.

We are looking for a specific individual, place the responsibility for data management and coordination of specific clinical studies. This includes the integration, automation and validation of data and participation in meetings with researchers.

Department of Large Animal Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship commencing 1 July 2011 or soon thereafter. The application deadline is 25 February 2011.

Project description
Antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens is a global problem which threatens the health and welfare of both humans and animals. Carefully designed treatment protocols have the potential to reduce the rate of development of resistance. The goal of this project is to use theory developed using mathematical modelling in human medicine to formulate alternative treatment-protocols for antibiotic use against intestinal diseases in pigs.

This project is part of a wider consortium combining experimental and field trials with mathematical and statistical analysis: MINIRESIST, Minimizing antibiotic resistance development. Data from the experimental and field work will be used in the development and parameterisation of a mathematical model that predicts the development and spread of resistance in intensive pig production and the load of resistant bacteria at the time of slaughter as a function of treatment protocol. The mathematical modelling will be used to design treatment protocols which will be evaluated under field and experimental conditions with regard to the development of resistance and the efficacy of treatment. Using the mathematical model will allow the systematic exploration of the development of resistance under a wide range of treatment protocols that would be impractical to test experimentally. The modelling results will be used to formulate scenario-specific treatment protocols that result in the minimal occurrence of resistant bacteria.

The successful applicant will be part of the MINIRESIST consortium team. We seek applications from individuals with an interest in developing quantitative approaches to biological problems who have either a biological or mathematical/computing science background. The successful applicant will be employed at Department of Large Animal Sciences, University of Copenhagen, but should also plan a research stay at Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine, University of Glasgow as well as collaboration with Department of Informatics and Mathematical Modelling, Technical University of Denmark.

We are looking for a PhD student to work on a project “Next generation sequencing for studying viruses and RNA silencing-based antiviral defense in model and crop plants”

We shall apply the Illumina deep-sequencing technology and develop bioinfomatic tools to study the viral genome, transcriptome and small RNA populations in experimentally infected Arabidopsis plants and naturally-infected crop plants with the ultimate goal to obtain knowledge for designing an effective RNA-based antiviral vaccine.

Virus-infected crop plants including rice, cassava, blackgram, cotton, banana and tomato, collected in fields worldwide, will be investigated by deep-sequencing of fractionated nucleic acids in order to (i) identify and de novo assemble complete genomes of newly emerging and resistance-breaking viruses, viral strains and viral satellites; (ii) determine the nucleotide polymorphism in virus populations; (ii) de novo assemble the viral transcriptome and (ii) create genome-wide maps of virus-derived siRNAs.

The project is part of a large COST action network with more than 20 member-countries (http://costfa0806.aua.gr/).

A successful candidate should have a master/diploma degree in molecular biology and a background and/or a strong interest in boinformatics.

Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research

We offer a 3 years position as Early Stage Researcher with the framework of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network Nucleosome4D. The PhD student will carry out a project aimed at reconstitution and structural analysis of silent chromatin from S. cerevisiae. We have successfully expressed and assembled SIR proteins on nucleosomal arrays and now seek to determine the structure by crystalization of subdomains and EM tomography of the entire nucleosome-repressor complex. The project requires the application of skills in biochemistry, molecular biology (tissue culture, basic biochemistry, nucleic acid detection) and willingness to be trained in EM tomography.

Program Description

As part of the Marie Curie Training Network 4D we offer a PhD fellowship to study the structure of silent chromatin reconstituted from recombinant repressor proteins and histones. The project will be pursued in collaboration with the protein structure facility at the FMI and the Center for Imaging and nanoanalytic analysis of the University of Basel. The successful applicant will come with basic skills in biochemistry and with good grasp of biophysical principles. The project will entail protein purification, protein-DNA binding studies and structure determination. Sir protein assembly has been published from the Gasser laboratory (see Martino et al.,Molecular Cell 2009). The project will be guided by a postdoc in the laboratory as well as the group leader.. Training in an array of career advancing skills (speaking, writing, presentations and computational biology) will be provided as part of the Marie Curie Training Network. Nucleosome4D involves 14 organizations from different countries and will carry out multidisciplinary collaborative research projects focused on deciphering nucleosome structure and function across biological space and time (Nucleosome4D). Our main objective is to provide young researchers with world-class research & training in chromatin biology. We will use cutting-edge methods and collaborative projects to determine how nucleosomes are remodeled during transcription, when genes are silenced, as cell divide, as stem cells differentiate, during organismal development and in human disease. We utilize complementary approaches in structural biology, biophysics, cell biology, live-cell imaging, biochemistry, genetics, genomics and bioinformatics.

Laura Ashley Residency Award at Aberystwyth Arts Centre

Applications are now invited for the Laura Ashley Residency Award. The successful artist will be based for a period of 3 months between May - July 2011 at the Creative Arts Units at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, part of Aberystwyth University.

The residencies are open to UK visual artists in all disciplines including applied arts. The aim of the residency is to allow an artist ‘time out’ to develop their work as they wish while also including 12 days of education work with people in the locality. The basic idea of this education work should be proposed by the artist with their application, and the details of the project will be planned and organised by Arts Centre staff with the artist, before their arrival.

The successful artist will receive studio space of c. 35 square metres, accommodation, living expenses for the duration of their residency and extra payment per day of education work.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s Artists’ Residencies are based in the award-winning Creative Arts Units designed by Thomas Heatherwick. The residencies offer the chance for the artist to step away from the everyday constraints of life and experience time in which to develop individual artistic practice, and also to exchange ideas in a creative atmosphere with people from other disciplines. The Laura Ashley Residency also offers the opportunity to plan and carry out an educational project within the area. We do expect the successful artist to have some experience of education work, but they will also receive support and guidance from the experienced Visual Arts Education team.

The residency also includes:

- An informal public talk by the artist about their practice
- Arranged visits to other arts venues in Wales
- Open Studio exhibition of work at the end of the residency.

The possibility of the artist’s work being exhibited for a longer period in one of the Arts Centre Galleries will be discussed during the residency.

The Residency Award will cover the following costs for the agreed period: cost of the Studio, including heating, lighting etc; accommodation arranged locally. A fixed sum of £100 per week for living expenses and £25 per week for materials will be awarded, plus £100 per day for the 12 days of education work. An additional amount is available for materials specifically for the workshops. Travel to and from Aberystwyth at the start and end of the residency is borne by the artist.

The studios have basic furniture only. Facilities within the Arts Centre will be available by negotiation, eg. digilab equipment, darkroom, ceramics studio etc.

Applicants will be evaluated on criteria including the artistic or professional excellence of their work and of their proposed educational project; their previous experience in educational projects and interest in undertaking this; and the extent to which a residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre will contribute to the artist’s development and be consistent with the applicant’s creative goals, and professional development.

SPRING Singapore is the landscape design business in Singapore, improving the management of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through the development of management scholarship (MDS) required.

MDS is used to finance the following levels:

Deadlines and due dates are sources of stress for almost everyone on the planet, and this stress is only made worse when there’s money on the line. You’re busy enough during the school year, and successfully applying for scholarships and meeting scholarship application deadlines can seem an impossible task. However, with the right strategy, you can stay on track and easily meet scholarship application deadlines.
Start Early

Search for available scholarships around the beginning of your senior year of high school, if not sooner. If you’re already in college and looking for scholarships for the next academic year, you will still want to kick things off in the early fall. Most scholarship application deadlines fall between October and March, a time when students tend to have the most on their plates academically. New scholarship information might not be posted for every award when you search, but you will get a good idea of which scholarship opportunities you will want to pursue, as well as when their application deadlines are. Even if this year’s contest information is not yet available, scholarship application deadlines tend to fall around the same time each year and the application requirements also tend to be similar from year-to-year. For example, a scholarship essay contest might change prompts from year to year, but the scholarship provider is unlikely to significantly alter requirements for word counts or supporting materials.
Make a Plan

Figure out which scholarship awards you plan to apply for and around when the contests close. Check those deadlines against other deadlines you need to meet (tests, major assignments, academic or athletic competitions, etc.) then form a plan for how to get everything done. What the Committee Looks For

Scholarships are merit-based gifts designed to help defray the cost of a college education. Millions of dollars in scholarship monies are available from private companies, non-profit organizations, universities and other sources.

Many of these scholarships are available only to students who fit a narrowly defined set of eligibility requirements.

Regardless of what the scholarship’s specific set of eligibility requirements, selection committees are looking for well-rounded candidates who excel in one or more of the following categories: Academics, Internship & Work Experience, Community Service, Leadership. By being able to demonstrate strength in some or all of these four essential qualities, you will undoubtedly advance your standing with any scholarship committee.
Academics

Whether you are applying for a scholarship from a pharmaceutical company or a non-profit organization, most scholarship committees will take into consideration your overall commitment to academics. Even if the scholarship you want does not require a high level of academic achievement, the selection committee may still reasonably be interested in your grades or other indications that you take your studies seriously. After all, you are asking for money to pay for higher education, not a trip to the beach.

For some scholarships committees, academic commitment is translated into a minimum GPA requirement; for others, the breadth and depth of your coursework is more important. If you are already in college at the time of your application, expect a selection committee to consider your GPA; major, minor and course load; academic awards and honors; body of published work; and letters of recommendation from professors and advisors. For high school students, committees will look at your GPA, class rank, number of honors and AP classes, and letters of recommendation from teachers concerning your academic promise.

If you have struggled with your GPA, have not yet declared a major, or do not have a single award to your credit, don’t panic. You do not have to write off scholarship assistance just yet. Not all committees demand - or even care about - honor roll and Dean’s List. For some scholarships, a well-rounded candidate with a lower GPA (even a 2.0, for example) is more appealing than one who aces his exams but doesn’t do anything with his time other than study.
Internship & Work Experience

Scholarship selection committees are interested in seeing how you relate to the world outside the proverbial ivory tower. They are looking first and foremost for initiative and commitment. Do you work a part-time (or full-time) job in addition to your studies? Are you a major breadwinner for your family?

Scholarship committees are less concerned with your job description and earning power than with your ability to demonstrate responsibility. You can do this by presenting strong and compelling letters of reference from your employer and showing a history of commitment to your place of work.

You can also demonstrate initiative by having an internship - either paid or unpaid. Particularly attractive to selection committees are those internships related either to your major course of study or to the field of the scholarship.
Community Service

In addition to the work you have done for pay - or for credit, in the case of an internship – volunteerism and service to your community make potential scholarship candidates even more attractive to selection committees.

By volunteering, you show not only that you are civic-minded but also that you care about a cause broader than your own advancement. From working the phones for a political candidate to candy striping in the children’s ward at your local hospital, giving of your time and talent is a noble use of your resources. Plus, many civic and non-profit organizations give scholarships - and past volunteers make the top of the priority list for selection committees.

To demonstrate your commitment to community service, go beyond just listing volunteer assignments on your scholarship application. Write an essay about how volunteering has impacted on your academic or career ambitions, what have you learned from serving the community, or why being a volunteer changed your political beliefs. Also helpful to your candidacy with the scholarship committee are letters of recommendation from volunteer supervisors. Letters should stress your commitment, dedication, selflessness and maturity.
Leadership

Leadership is a meta-quality that should be reflected in all aspects of a student’s life, including her academics and paid employment, as well as her community service. Beyond the initiative it takes to become a leader, scholarship committees are also looking for the consensus building skills and motivational abilities required for leadership success.

Getting elected class president doesn’t necessarily prove you are a true leader. Scholarship committees will be more interested in the way you utilize your position to help others or rally fellow students to lobby for change.

To show the selection committee that you are leadership material, focus your essays on a pivotal leadership opportunity or challenge and reflect on how that experience shaped you. Letters of recommendation that cite examples of your leadership skills can be very helpful to your candidacy, as well.

The Dan David Prize laureates annually donate twenty scholarships of US$15,000 each to outstanding doctoral and post-doctoral students of exceptional promise in the chosen fields.

Ten scholarships are awarded to doctoral and post-doctoral students at universities throughout the world and ten scholarships at Tel Aviv University.

Tip #1. ATTENTION TO DEADLINES
Try and have your application arrive EARLY as possible, absolutely not after the deadline date! I like to send applications with a "return receipt requested" or "registered" to make sure they get there. I think that this also conveys a positive characteristic about the sender.

Tip #3 ANSWER THE "MAIL"

While this seems obvious, you must construct your application to make it EASY for the committee to see that you have provided every thing that was required. I like to provide items in the order that they are listed in the application. If possible, do not mix items on the same page. In another tip I am going to tell you to add extra items that were not requested to give your application that something extra. However, DO NOT add extra items if you are specifically told not to add anything extra. This means that you can not follow directions if you add items when your are forbidden to do so.

Tip #4 ADD EXTRA ITEMS TO YOUR APPLICATION (if not forbidden).

This is where you get to be creative to find ways and things that present you in a positive light to the selection committee. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Write a short essay on MY EDUCATION/CAREER GOALS. Try to keep to one page but no more than two.

2. Write a paragraph or two on how this scholarship award will help you reach your education/career goals.

3. My son's guidance counselor gave him a paper that congratulated him on being in the top 10% of his class and acknowledged his hard work to get there. We included this because it put him in a "positive light" and his hard work at his academics was recognized.

4. Before my son reached his 18th birthday, he registered for the Military Draft as required for all males when they reach the age of 18. He received a letter from the draft board congratulating him for doing his civic duty prior to his 18th birthday. You guessed it, this was also one of our "extra items". A lot of scholarship committee members have military backgrounds or see this as good citizenship for this applicant.

5. One of the best extra items is a letter of acceptance for admission to "any" college. If the scholarship application is not for a specific college, you will be able to use the award at "any" college. You do not have to use it at the college you used in your application. Later you can get more college acceptance letters and when your make your selection you can notify the scholarship award committee of where to send the award. Therefore, any letter of acceptance shows that your are serious but it does not "lock" you into using the award at that college.

These are just a few examples to get you thinking. I would limit my extras to three or four at the most. Too many and you "sour" your application.

Again, MAKE SURE you are not forbidden to add extra items before you do so.

Be creative to find things that make you look good and share them with the committee.

Tip #5 PERSONALIZE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

This is a tip that conveys you took the time to make this application special. When you have a letter of recommendation addressed to the specific organization or person that is administering the application process it says that you took the time and effort to make this letter "Special" for them. If all you have is a letter that starts "To Whom It May Concern", it is better than nothing. But if you can personalize the letter it says you cared to send the very best.

SUB TIP #5a Offer to do the work for the writer of your letter of recommendation. For example, you want to apply to twenty scholarship programs. When you ask someone to write you "1" letter of recommendation they say sure. When you say you need twenty letters they say "sorry" I don't have the time. Once they write you one letter, ask if you can put it on the computer so the TO ADDRESSEE can be personalized for each application and your writer only has to "sign their name twenty times". Now your writer is happy to help you because you have done the work and make it easy for them to help you. If they have nice letter head, ask for blank copies to be used in this process.

SUB TIP #5b This is an "ADD EXTRA ITEM/s" when the application does not require a letter of recommendation.

SUB TIP #5c Try and get three to five letters of recommendation in your files. This will let you pick and choose which one or ones to send in for a specific application. I would never send more than three for an application unless the directions ask for more. I will cover some tips to give your recommendation writer in a later TIP.

TIP #6 - PROOF READ ALL MATERIALS and NEATNESS IS A MUST
When you write anything you must use correct grammar and spelling. If you have a problem in this area ask your English teacher to help you with proofreading your essay, cover letter, extra items you have included, and even letters of recommendation prepared by others. When there are hundreds or thousands of applications to review, correctness and neatness become the first screen out factor. Only when the "pile" is smaller does the content of your application start to become a factor in the selection process.

TIP # 7 - SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION IN A CLEAR PLASTIC FOLDER
Now that your application is complete, the final "presentation" tip is to place all of your items in a clear plastic folder, with a slide locking binder. I like the cheap clear ones so that your "Thank You Cover Letter" (Tip #2) is on top. For that final "touch" I also like to include a wallet size picture of the student in the lower left side of your packet. The next item/s in you application packet are those required in the application (Tip #3 Answer the mail). Next I add any extra items (if not forbidden) and finally I place any letter(s) of recommendations.

If "extras" are forbidden, you should consider NOT using a plastic folder, however, this can be a judgement call on your part. Read the application carefully again regarding extras. Some judges feel the plastic folders "give them more work" (to remove the applications from the plastic folder) while others have no problem with it, even though they may forbid extras. I know, this can be confusing!

Your application packet is a great looking presentation of YOU, don't mess it up by folding it to fit a small envelope. Use an 8X10 type envelope so your application arrives looking great. Consider sending it "Return Receipt Requested" so you know it arrived!

Spelling and Neatness Counts! Remember to proofread your applications and essays!

2010 NESA Scholarship Applications

The deadline for NESA scholarship submissions has passed. Thanks to everyone who submitted an application, and to everyone who assisted a Scout in the application process.

Please do not contact NESA to check on the progress of your application. Winners will be notified by July 1, 2010. A complete list of recipients will be posted at www.NESA.org on or before Aug. 1, 2010. Only winners will be contacted, and they will be notified as soon as a decision has been reached.

Please do not call to verify that your application was received intact or on time, as this takes valuable time away from our staff members, who have less than a month to process more than 5,000 applications before sending them to the regional selection committees.

If you are a winner, we will continue to contact you, your parents, your Scoutmaster, and your council until we reach you. We will not award your scholarship to an alternate winner until every effort has been made to contact you to verify that you accept or deny the funds.

Scholarships
A surprising number of students fail to see that identifying scholarships can be one of the most important parts of the successful scholarship search. There are thousands and thousands of scholarships available to students through internet searches and scholarship guides, but no one student will ever qualify for all of them. Even if one person were to qualify for all of them, most students probably would not have the time to apply for each and every one. For this reason, a well-defined scholarship search can be invaluable to students looking for some extra money to fund their education.

The best and cheapest way to run a scholarship search is to find a good, reliable scholarship search engine (like fastweb.com or srnexpress.com). Internet searches are free (do not ever pay a fee for scholarship searches, instead use that money towards your education), and unlike scholarship guides that simply list awards, even when they are sorted by subject matter, the internet can help you filter out awards for which you simply don't qualify. This means finding scholarships that are best suited to who you are, both as a student and as a person.

Also, be sure to meet the scholarship deadline. You may be the highest qualified student for a particular scholarship award, but if your application was submitted late, you most likely will not be considered as an eligible applicant. Know the application deadlines for each scholarship application you're filing, and turn them in on time.

Application Materials
Each scholarship has its own application. It is important to read the materials carefully and to understand what information is requested. Carefully typed applications make the best impression. Apply only for those scholarships for which you are eligible. It is highly doubtful that you will be awarded if you are not eligible for a scholarship.

Make sure to take the necessary steps to ensure your application gets where it needs to go. Before sending the application, make a copy of the entire packet and keep it on file. If your application goes astray, you can always reproduce it quickly. Make sure your name appears on all pages of the application. Pieces of your application may get lost unless they are clearly identified.

It would also be a good idea to send your application with Delivery Confirmation through the United States Post Office. If our office does not have your application on file, but you can provide proof of delivery by the deadline date, we will accept your copy as received on time.

Activities and Honors
List all relevant activities and honors, but be selective. If you have more activities than can fit in the space provided do not include the ones that are not significant; the two days you spent last spring on a community clean-up day, for instance.

Read the criteria for selection carefully to understand what the reviewers are looking for. For instance, the Presidential Scholarship looks for applicants who can show “leadership experience with [an] outstanding extracurricular record," so include your volunteer and community service activities, emphasizing those in which you took a leadership role.

Most importantly, your activities should represent your varied talents and passions outside the class room. The reviewers are trying to get a sense of who you are and what you believe in. Make sure your activities reflect that.

Letters of Recommendation
Choosing your recommenders
These letters are extremely important. Choose your recommenders carefully. Think of the letters as an integral part of a package that will present an accurate and complete picture of you and your qualifications. Scholarships such as the Regents' Scholarship considers not only academic achievement, but leadership ability and community service as well. While maybe one letter of recommendation should be from an academic source, at least one should address your leadership abilities and commitment to the community.

The ideal letter of recommendation
Your letters of recommendations should come from teachers or academic advisors who are familiar not only with your academic abilities, but with your personal interests and background and how those relate to your ability to carry out the program of study you wish to pursue. If the teacher or academic advisor is familiar with your extracurricular activities and leadership abilities, s/he should also incorporate that into the letter.

The letters should address the qualifications sought. Recommenders should address only those elements of your application on which they can comment confidently.

How to ask for a letter of recommendation
Start early. Discuss your plans with your recommenders now, before the application is even available. Let them know what you would like to study and why you want to apply for the scholarship. These discussions can help you clarify your goals and plans as well.

As soon as you have the application forms (applications for Incoming Freshmen Scholarships are available at your high school counselor's office, the Office of Recruitment Services and the Scholarship Office around early October), schedule a meeting with your recommender. Give your recommender a written description of the scholarship and a copy of your personal statement and proposed academic program. You may also want to provide a copy of your transcript and an autobiography or resume highlighting activities and honors. You should also give your recommenders appropriately addressed envelopes with postage, if necessary. Be sure to also give them plenty of time to write the letter, do not wait until the last minute.

You may also want to remind the recommender that it should include your full name with middle initial. You would be surprised on how many include only the first name of the student within the body of the letter.

The Personal Statement
The following section is an excerpt from the Yale University Undergraduate career Services' publication entitled Applying for Fellowships.

"The personal statement presents an opportunity for you to speak about yourself. Your essay should show that you have ideas and opinions, are able to think logically, and can express yourself clearly, with economy and elegance.

Clear writing is the result of clear thinking. The first and most important task is to decide what you want to say. This is a short essay. You must be highly selective. Consider carefully what you wish to impress upon the reader. Remember the nature of your audience. It is composed of people who are probably as intelligent as you are, well educated, and vastly experienced in this work. Do not try to fool or second guess your reader; you will seem silly if you do. Do not write in a cute, coy, or gimmicky style: selection committees have heard it all already. Do show that you have thought deeply and broadly about what you have learned in your academic career and what you hope to learn next.

When you have written a first draft, start the work of refining, simplifying, and polishing. Do you say exactly what you mean? Is any section, sentence, or word superfluous, ambiguous, or awkward?

Are your verbs strong and active? Have you removed unneeded qualifiers? Are you sure that each accomplishment and interest you mention supports one of your main ideas? Do not apologize. Do not misrepresent yourself. You are writing as an adult who wishes to join the community of scholars and other professionals. You must write as a peer and potential member of such a community.

Correctness and style are vital. Neatness counts. Check and check again your spelling, the agreement of verbs and persons, syntax. Your thoroughness demonstrates that you have learned and mastered this art and that your future teachers and colleagues will not be troubled with sloppy thinking or writing.

Ask several individuals whose judgment you respect to read and criticize a draft of your essay. Possible reviewers include faculty members, writing tutors, and friends who can assess how well your essay represents you."

A final note
Remember, in any application (for a job, grant, graduate school, etc.) the powers that be want to know three things: why is it important to you, why it is right for you and why you are right for it. Your application should be built around this message.

Applying for a Resource Scholarship

AFB 2010 Scholarship Application

The deadline to apply for grants from 2010 AFB is April 30, 2010.

We are now accepting applications for scholarships for 2010 LBS. Please read the instructions to read carefully, because our application process has changed compared to previous years.

It is in your best interest to review the entire application before submitting the application. Most scholarships are designated for specific studies AFB. Please carefully read the descriptions of scholarships to make grants that are available for your field of study available. * Proof of U. S. CITIZENSHIP: The following items are not allowed, a birth certificate, naturalization papers or a photocopy of a U.S. passport. [Note: U.S. citizenship is NOT for Ferdinand Torres Scholarship is not necessary.]
* Proof of legal blindness AFB requires a letter recently signed a single page of the official letterhead of an optometrist, ophthalmologist or a public or private agency for the blind, certifying that you are blind. No other statements, medical reports or affidavits are not accepted. PLEASE SEND all medical reports. Keep the letter should be clear that you are blind (ie, have best corrected visual acuity) of 20/200 or less in the better eye and / or visual field of less than 20 degrees in the better eye.

Scholarships in the field of rehabilitation and / or training of persons who are blind or visually impaired:

The Delta Gamma Foundation Florence Margaret Harvey Memorial Scholarship: One (1) $ 1,000 scholarship and an undergraduate or graduate degree in the field of rehabilitation or training of persons who are blind or visually impaired.

Rudolph Dillman Memorial Scholarship: compensation point is not open to previous recipients. It offers four (4) scholarships of $ 2,500 each for students or graduates who are studying in school full time in the field of rehabilitation or training of persons who are blind or visually impaired. Scholarships for literature and music:

The RL Gillette Scholarship: Two (2) scholarships of $ 1,000 each to women who have entered a full-time job four years degree in Bachelor of literature or music.

The Gladys. C. Anderson Memorial Scholarship: One (1) $ 1,000 scholarship and a student or students studying classical music and religious data.

The Ferdinand Torres offers a scholarship (1) scholarship of $ 2,500 for a full time student or graduate students. Preference is given to provide new immigrants to the United States, and residing in the city of New York Metropolitan Area. To be eligible, applicants must live the United States, but should not be a citizen of the United States.

UNLV Scholarship Application Instructions

IMPORTANT: Please read this page before submitting them.

You are about to complete the application, which is necessary for consideration of awards UNLV. This program is open to students entering first year, transfer and admission to undergraduate addition, all graduates, students and all professionals. As mentioned above, the application grant is effective from the winter semester and will be considered for all scholarships available throughout the year until late summer into account.

Students selected for scholarships will be notified by receiving an e-mail or regular mail. National Federation of the Blind 2010 Scholarship Program

Each year, its national convention in July, the NFB provides a wide array of thirty scholarships to recognize the achievements of blind students. All candidates for these awards:

1. be blind (PDF) in both eyes and
2. must reside in the United States, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico, and
3. have or are planning to pursue full-time students studying in a college program in an institution of the United States from the 2010 school year, except that the scholarship can be a person employed full time and part-time while attending school and are given
4. must complete the entire NFB National Convention and all the activities planned program of scholarships.

In addition, each winner receives a scholarship assistance for the 2010 National Federation of the Blind Annual Convention in July to receive offers an excellent opportunity for high level networking with people active in many blind, many professions and trades.

For this reason, a well-defined support is invaluable to students seeking a little more money to finance their studies.

Letters should include the qualifications sought. Recommenders should focus on the elements of your application, on which they can take certain positions.

How can you request a letter of recommendation
Start early. Discuss your plans with your Recommenders now, before the application is also available. Let them know what you want to study and why you are applying for a scholarship. These conversations can help you clarify your goals and plans as well.

Once you complete the application form (applications for scholarships to new students in the office) your high school counselor in the Office of Recruitment Services and the Office of Scholarship from October, a meeting with your recommender. Give your recommender a written description of the award and a copy of your personal statement and curriculum offered. You can also submit a copy of the transcript and autobiography or resume activities Highlights and honors. You should therefore also your Recommenders addressed envelopes with postage, if necessary. Make sure you give them enough time to write the letter, rather than waiting until the last minute.

The Personal Statement
The following is an excerpt from the publication services of Yale Undergraduate Career regarding grant applications.

"The personal status is an opportunity for you to talk to them. Your essay should show that you have ideas and opinions are capable of thinking logically, and can articulate, with economy and elegance.

Writing clearly is the result of thinking clearly. The first task, and most important is to decide what you mean. This is a short essay. You must be very selective. Consider carefully what you want to impress the reader. Remember, the nature of your audience. These are people who are probably as intelligent as they are composed, well trained and very experienced in this work. Do not mislead your readers or guess, you seem absurd, if you too. Do not write in a nice style, Coy or Gimmicky: selection committees have all heard already. Show that you have thought deeply and broadly about what you learned in your academic career and what you hope to learn next.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme

Important information for all Applicants

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from the Department for International Development (DFID), and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the United Kingdom.

The aim of the Scheme is to assist students from developing Commonwealth countries who are of excellent academic calibre but for financial reasons would not otherwise be able to afford to study in the United Kingdom. The Scheme allows them to benefit from postgraduate study at a University in the United Kingdom which will help them to contribute toward the development of their home countries.

Awards are for taught masters courses only, subjects must be related to the economic, social and technological development of a candidate’s country.

- hold a first degree at either first or upper second class level;

- be sufficiently fluent in English to pursue the course;

- have not previously studied for one year or more in a developed country;

- not be employed by a government department (at national level) or a parastatal organisation (employees of universities are normally acceptable);

- be themselves, or through families, unable to pay for the proposed course of study in the UK;

- be willing to confirm that they will return to their home country as soon as their period of study is complete.

Application Deadline and Procedure

In 2010/11, UCL is able to nominate 2 students for these awards. The closing date for applications is 31^st March 2010.

Eligible candidates must complete the UCL application form for Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme (CSSS), and submit it – along with supporting documents specified in the form – to the relevant department at UCL which offers the programme the applicant intends to study, by 31st March.
